1. Kaset ‘The Best of El Chicano” by Nirwana Musicassettes

Kaset saya banya rekaman Nirwana: Deep Purple (Who Do You Think We Are), Uriah Heep (Demons and Wizards) – Starlite, El Chicano (lupa album apa), Mahogany Rush (Strange Universe), Chicago (lupa album apa), Pink Floyd (Wish You Were Here) yang saya kembalikan karena saya pikir kasetnya rusak di lagu “Welcome to the Machine”.

El Chicano juga mewarnai masa remaja saya meski musiknya bukan tergolong rock namun nuansamatik.

Karena faktor nuansamatik tersebutlah, maka saya setel kaset pemberian mas GT ini terlebih dulu. Whoooaaa!!!

3. Kaset Free “The Free Story” rekaman Yess #114

Bingo
Ekseption  Eclectic ProgReview by Gatot

4 stars It’s quite funny that I found the cassette of this album yesterday at the secondary market. When I saw it I was not aware that Ekseption has ever made an album with this name ‘Bingo’ and unfortunately I could not search the net for information due to bad or weak signal of my mobile phone. Interestingly no one seemed interested to buy this cassette so finally I decided to purchase it. It turned out from the net that this album was the first one from the band without the involvement of one of its founding fathers Rick van der Linden (keyboard) who left the band to form Trace. His position was then replaced by Hans Jansen (1974- 1977).As we all know that Ekseption was a Dutch progressive rock ensemble with changing membership, active from 1967, with the embryo of bands named as The Jokers and Incrowd. The group started out playing jazz, pop and R&B covers, but, impressed by a gig of The Nice, Rick van der Linden (keyboard) decided to concentrate on producing classical rock, modern re-interpretations of classical works with bass, drums and horn charts. Most of their albums contain both original songs and re-interpreted classical pieces.

Having known the departure of van der Linden I then did not expect a lot with this album. But I was wrong because I can assure you that this Bingo album is actually as good as its predecessor Trinity – I would say. And the most important thing is that the album still maintains the character of original Ekseption music with great opening of ‘From Ekseption’ with great dynamics and composition. The music flows typical of Ekseption with great combination of jazz, rock as well as classical music. The usual use of trumpet backed with keyboard still show good musicianship of the members. There is quite a long and interesting drums solo in the middle of the track. The following track ‘Nightwalk’ is a mellow one with key dimensions of classical music represented by keyboard work. You will also find the famous ‘Sabre Dance’ demonstrated in anenergetic way with great combination of keyboard and trumpet in relatively fast tempo. ‘Brother Rabbit’ is a short track with nice opening of percussion work followed with music in mellow style with some sudden changes of tempo during transition pieces of trumpet work.

Overall, this album is an excellent addition to any prog music collection. The composition has nice melody that flows nicely from track to track with many tempo changes in the middle or during transition pieces. Despite the changes of tempo and sometimes style the music still have a solid structural integrity so that it demonstrates as one cohesive whole. Keep on proggin’ …!

Dan ini TRACE:

Trace
Trace  Symphonic ProgReview by Gatot
Special Collaborator Honorary Collaborator

4 stars Rick van der Linden’s departure from his original band he co-found in 1968, Ekseption, to form Trace seemed really worth it as in here with his new band he could explore his musical talents widely as he feels that this is his band supported by other musicians Jaap Van Eik (bass, guitar) , Pierre Van Der Linden (drums). The band was originally named as ACE but since there was British band with the same name they changed the name to Trace.Well yeah, this album is much more dynamic – at least on keyboard side – where Rick really plays his keyboard the way he really wants it. For me personally it’s really great because I can sense the nuances of ELP music with much more classical music touch presented by Rick van Der Linden. Take for example the excellent opening track “Galliarde” which is basically from 3rd Part of the Italian Concerto BWV 971 in F Major by J.S. Bach and traditional Polish dance, arranged by Rick van der Linden. If you follow the music right from start to end it’s a very dynamic one where you can hear dynamic and inventive keyboard work by Rick van Der Linden backed with jaw-dropping drums work with great energy. And it’s not only that….you can hear the powerful bassline which also followed with bass guitar solo – remembering to the composition of ‘Improvisation’ from Ekseption ‘Trinity’ album. I really admire this sort of music as this refers to the classical music but performed in jazz-rock style by Trace.

Overall, the composition is really well rounded with its main roots on classical music and then expanded into jazz-rock fashion that finally forms Trace music. The melody flows nicely from track to track, stemming from the original classical music – but the changes of tempo and style do not cause the music being off-tracked as it all form as one cohesive whole. Keep on proggin’ ..!
